The rules in plain words
- The board hides a fixed number of mines; no mine moves during the game.
- A revealed number counts the mines in its eight neighboring cells.
- Flag a cell when you are certain it is a mine; unflag it the same way.
- Your first reveal is always safe — the board is generated around it.
- A clue is satisfied when it has exactly its number of flags around it; its remaining neighbors are safe.
- You win when every cell that is not a mine has been revealed.
How to play
Read the numbers
A number counts the mines in the eight cells touching it. Big number, crowded neighborhood; small number, open ground.
Reveal what must be safe
If a clue of 2 already has two flagged neighbors, every other neighbor is safe — reveal it and keep reading.
Flag what must be a mine
If a clue of 1 has exactly one unrevealed neighbor left, that neighbor is a mine. Mark it with a flag.
Your first click is always safe
The board is built after your first reveal, so the opening cell is never a mine. Start anywhere.
What this game practices
Follow numbered clues to conclusions that must be true.
- Turn a clue and its flags into one cell that is definitely safe or definitely a mine
- Combine two clues when one candidate set sits inside another
- Say out loud why a move is forced, not just lucky
